I used this to make flares on 3/16" cunifer line for my Escort. With no practice and no previous experience I made four flares, none of which leaked. Start by putting the fitting on the tubing. If you forget this part you will have to cut off the flare and now your tube may be too short. I filed the tubing flat after cutting it, filed the sides at an angle, and reamed the inside before attempting the flares. If you are working above the engine compartment making flares, stick the tubing through a bag or piece of paper so when you drop the small disc anvil it won't get lost in the engine compartment. I used a tubing cutter but I think this tended to compress the tube, making it slightly oval. With the soft tubing and this tool I was still successful but I recommend using a Dremel cutoff wheel to cut the tubing. The tubing is supposed to stick through the tool as high as the step on the anvil but the 3/16 anvil has two steps. Use the first (lower) one.

O.K. the CONS: are that you will not be able to make a 3/16 line double flair with this tool alone, all of the other line size dies have serrated jaws to hold the tubing from slipping, but the 3/16 die is smooth walled and regardless how tight you clamp it the tube pushes out while setting the first flair. I keep one of the cheap $20 dollar flaring tools handy because the jaws for the 3/16 die are serrated and hold the tube, but I use the Rigid vise to clamp the cheap die for the first flair then switch to the Rigid die to set the double flair. All in all it's a good solid tool, the other size dies work fine just the 3/16 die should have been redesigned. But then is was built for the plumbing/copper trade, and us car guys need a good flair tool for brake lines.
PROS: Excellent solid tool and the machine work for the die forms a perfect bell shaped flair, the vise secures the tubing adequately, minus the 3/16 jaw area, but this tool will not wear out as the $20 cheap ones do.

Any DIY guide on flaring brake lines stresses the need for a quality tool to get flare that seal reliably. This tool is great, before getting this I rented a flaring tool from a local auto parts store and also bought a flaring tool from a major mail order tool supply company. Neither was as easy to use and consistent as this one.
The other two tools had clamping jaws that were difficult to align so flares would come out lop-sided and the jaws also relied on aggressive serrations to hold the tube in place, marring the outer surface of the tube, and making it difficult to pass the flare nut over the tooled section. This tool, at least in the diameter that I used (3/16") did not rely on aggressive serrations and produced clean smooth surfaces before and after the flare.
